Downtown Tecumseh Walking Tour: Every Shop, Cafe & Hour on the Strip
Downtown Tecumseh is easier to walk than it looks. Almost everything worth stopping for sits on one straight stretch of West and East Chicago Boulevard, with a short spur down South Evans Street at the main corner.
From Basil Boys at the west end to Tecumseh Tavern at the east end is about 220 meters, a three-minute walk. Add the Tecumseh Area Historical Museum two blocks further east and the whole thing is roughly 360 meters, still under a five-minute stroll. Park once and you can do the entire tour on foot. The quick answer: go on a Saturday
The single most useful fact about downtown Tecumseh is one no map shows you: Saturday is the only day the entire district is open at once. The independent shops here keep their own hours, and a lot of them close Sunday through Tuesday. Grey Fox Floral, Michigan Wares, Patina Jewelry, Tilton & Sons Shoes, and Second Chance Consignment are all dark on Sundays. The British Pantry, Harvest Chocolate, and Tecumseh Bread & Pastry are closed early in the week. And the Tecumseh Area Historical Museum opens its doors only on Saturdays, 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
So if you want the full walk with every door open, come Saturday between about 11 AM and 3 PM. Sunday and Monday still work for a coffee, a meal, and a few shops, but with gaps. The day-by-day breakdown is at the bottom of this page.
Start at the west end: coffee and pastry
Begin near the West Chicago Boulevard end, where the coffee and the bakery are. This is the natural first stop and the easiest place to leave the car.

Harvest Chocolate is the one to plan around: the chocolate is made from the bean right here in the shop, something you will not find again for a long drive in any direction. If it is early in the week, it is closed, so this is another vote for Saturday.
The Evans Street corner
At the main intersection, take the short spur about 100 meters south down South Evans Street, then come back to the boulevard.

Cross to East Chicago Boulevard: the shops
Back at the corner, cross to East Chicago Boulevard. This is the densest run of independent stores in town, one storefront after another. This is where the walk earns its name, most of these are within a few doors of each other.

Finish at the east end: the museum
If it is a Saturday, walk the last two blocks east to the museum. It is the one anchor on this route with a single-day schedule, so it is worth timing the whole afternoon around it.
The Tecumseh Area Historical Museum at 302 East Chicago Boulevard is open Saturdays only, 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Housed in a former church, it holds the town’s local history collection and is free to walk through. Because it is Saturday-only, it is the natural reason to make this a Saturday walk in the first place.

Where to park
You do not need to move the car once. There is free on-street parking along Chicago Boulevard and free public lots just off it behind the storefronts on both the north and south sides. Leave the car near the West Chicago Boulevard end by Harvest Chocolate and Tecumseh Bread & Pastry, and the entire walk out to the museum and back is well under a mile round trip.
