Adrian Michigan Things to Do: A Day Trip Guide

Fifteen minutes south and totally worth it.

If you’re already spending time in Tecumseh, Adrian is the easy add-on nobody tells you about. It’s got a walkable downtown with actual personality, a theater older than the state itself, restaurants that punch way above their weight class, and enough parks to fill a whole afternoon. Adrian michigan things to do? More than you’d think for a town this size.

Here’s how to spend a day there – no decision fatigue required.

Start at the Croswell Opera House

This is the oldest continuously operating theater in Michigan. Built in 1866. Frederick Douglass spoke here. Susan B. Anthony too. John Philip Sousa brought his band through.

The building sits right on Maumee Street in downtown Adrian, and walking inside feels like stepping back about a hundred years – in a good way. The Croswell runs a full season of musicals, plays, and concerts, so check their calendar before you go. Even if nothing’s showing, the exterior alone is worth a walk-by.

It’s the kind of place that makes you wonder why more people don’t know about it.

Walk Downtown Maumee Street

Adrian’s downtown is centered on Maumee Street, and it’s genuinely walkable. Not “walkable” in the tourism-brochure sense where everything is half a mile apart. Actually walkable.

The Gallery of Shops is a mini-mall tucked inside one building – about 18,000 square feet of boutiques, gift shops, and local finds. SASS carries all Michigan-made brands like Cherry Republic and City Bird. Hang Loose Boutique has clothing and accessories if you’re in the mood to browse.

First Fridays bring out live music, food trucks, and shop events if you time it right. The buildings themselves are gorgeous – 19th-century brick storefronts that are part of a designated National Historic District.

You’ll notice the vibe here is different from a lot of small downtowns. People are actually hanging out, not just passing through.

Lunch at Maumee Street: Taproom + Kitchen

This is the lunch stop. Period.

Maumee Street: Taproom + Kitchen sits at 101 East Maumee and does seasonal small plates with locally sourced ingredients. The space has exposed brick and industrial lighting – it feels like a restaurant you’d find in Ann Arbor, but the prices don’t hurt as much.

The truffle fries are the move. The fried chicken and the braised beef hash both have followings. They rotate Michigan craft beers on tap from places like Tenacity Brewing and Four Keys Brewing, plus cocktails and wine.

Open most days 11am to 9pm, with a Sunday brunch from 10am to 3pm that’s worth building your whole day around.

The Adrian Armory Events Center

The Adrian Armory Events Center is a 1920s-era National Guard armory that got a full renovation in 2017. The original wooden floors, stained glass, and antique details are still there.

Most people know it as a wedding and event venue – the main banquet room holds 250 and has a full antique wood bar. But the Armory also hosts public events, concerts, and community gatherings throughout the year. Check their calendar. If something’s happening while you’re in town, go.

The Bravo Room has a white-marble fireplace and polished marble floors. The kind of room where you just stand there for a minute and look around.

Hidden Lake Gardens

About 15 minutes west of Adrian in Tipton, Hidden Lake Gardens is 755 acres of botanical gardens operated by Michigan State University. It was founded in 1926 by an Adrian businessman who spent 20 years landscaping it before donating the whole thing to MSU.

There are 12 miles of hiking trails, six miles of paved scenic drives, a conservatory, a bonsai garden, and a canopy walk that opened in 2023. The Reach for the Sky Canopy Walk puts you at tree level – it’s one of those things you didn’t know you wanted to do until you’re up there.

Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9am to 5pm. Small admission fee. Kids love it. Adults who think they won’t love it end up staying two hours.

Parks Worth a Stop

Adrian has a few parks that are genuinely nice – not just “nice for a small town.”

Trestle Park has wooden plank bridge trails through dense trees with the South Branch of the River Raisin running through it. Feels wild for being inside city limits.

Heritage Park is the go-to for biking and walking with well-maintained trails and green space.

Burr Ponds Park is the quiet option – walking trails around ponds, good for fishing and birdwatching when you need to decompress.

Siena Heights University

You wouldn’t normally put a university on a day-trip list, but the Siena Heights campus has a few things worth seeing. Trinity Gardens and St. Dominic Chapel are both open to visitors and genuinely beautiful. The Spencer Performing Arts building hosts shows and events that are open to the public.

The campus also means the surrounding area has solid coffee shops and casual restaurants that cater to college budgets – which means good food, reasonable prices.

Grab Dinner at 3 Dudes & Dinner

Before heading back to Tecumseh, swing by 3 Dudes & Dinner for a casual dinner. It’s the kind of place where the menu changes and the food is better than it has any right to be for the price.

Or if you want something with more taps, Great Lakes Eatery & Pub keeps things simple with good pub food and Michigan craft beer.

How to Get There from Tecumseh

Adrian is about 15 minutes straight down M-52 from Tecumseh. No highway driving, no complicated turns – just one road south.

Parking: Free street parking downtown. The lots behind Maumee Street are free too. You will not have a parking problem.

Best plan: Morning in downtown Adrian, lunch at Maumee Street Taproom, afternoon at Hidden Lake Gardens, dinner back in Adrian or Tecumseh. You’ll be home before dark.

Adrian is one of those places that keeps surprising you. Every time you think you’ve seen it all, someone mentions another restaurant or another park trail or another event at the Armory.
